The Kybalion: Hermetic Philosophy is a book published in 1908 by ‘Three Initiates’, who claim to base their discussion of the seven Hermetic principles on the old teachings of Hermes Trismegistus, the thrice-great legendary god whose figure is a combination of Hermes/Mercury and the Egyptian god Thoth. Gwydion fab Dôn is a magician of Welsh mythology, playing an important part in the Welsh Triads, the Book of Taliesin and the Stanzas of the Graves. Once the Fool has reached this card he has a story to tell, the story of discovering the world, overcoming obstacles, and integrating into the harmony, wholeness, and perfection of the macrocosm. The Major Arcana illustrates the initiation of the Fool (card 0) with the help of the Magician (card 1) and other symbolic personages (the High Priestess, the Empress, the Emperor, the Hierophant, the Hermit, etc.), who bring the Fool to understand the ways of the final card, the World (card 21). The Tarot deck is made up of 78 cards, of which 22 represent the Major Arcana, and 56 the Minor Arcana. The witches' esoteric force rejuvenates literature. The spell they cast is an occult force which encourages postmodern readers and writers to continue their stories, to develop the intertextual field generated by Shakespeare, and to link works which initially have not been connected in any way by their authors. The second example is represented by Sycorax and Serafine, a seventeenth century witch and her postmodern double: reshaped in Marina Warner's novel Indigo (1992), she is based on Shakespeare's character from The Tempest. I shall illustrate this assumption on the basis of two examples: the first, the female characters in Beckett's dramaticule Come and Go (1967), echo Shakespeare's Weird Sisters in Macbeth but bewitch the reader into turning around in an intertextual circle and surfing from one literary creation to another. Despite their sinister aspect and evil energies, postmodern witches have now partially lost their malignant powers and have gained an intertextual role instead this enriches their esoteric value with a metaliterary dimension.
